County Commissioners approve budget and tax rate for FY2021

John Lee

The Gray County Commissioners Court met on Tuesday morning for a special meeting which entailed two public hearings, one for the tax rate and one for the budget.

There was no public comment for either subject, although Commissioner Jeff Haley said he hadn’t heard any comments in the community on the matter.

Both the budget and the tax rate was approved. The No-New Revenue tax rate, which is $.593624/$100 on the general fund, $.069022/$100 for road & bridge and $.008522/$100 on the debt services. These figures makes the total $.671168/$100.

Commissioner Joe Wheeley made the motion and Commissioner Lake Arrington seconded on the both items and both passed unanimously.

Later in the meeting, Paul Loyd of Perry-Lefors Airport Board of Directors presented the Commissioners with the airport’s special committee’s recommendation for the lighting project.

Each company had a rating system from the Committee, but no dollar value as Texas Department of Transportation negotiates the costs since it is partially funded by a grant.

“If the Commissioners pick a company, in essence through the committee, and tell TXDOT that’s who you want to use for this project, TXDOT will negotiate the cost with that company,” Loyd said.

“They will negotiate until they come to an agreement. If TXDOT doesn’t agree with the company or feels like they want too much money, they will send the proposal back. But that’s unlikely to happen.”

The Commissioners agreed to go with Park, Hill, Smith and Cooper out of Lubbock as the engineering firm on the project.

The next County Commissioners meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. at the Gray County Courthouse, located at 205 N. Russell.
