Margie ‘Janet’ Barbee
Our beloved Margie “Janet” Barbee, at age 71, died on Thursday, August 6th 2020 at 12:13AM at Portland Adventist Hospital after suffering a severe head injury from falling during a heart attack Wednesday evening. As the Lord took this beautiful angel home, aside her, were her two devoted sons Rusty Barbee and Shane Barbee.
Janet Barbee was born in McLean, Texas to Leo & Louise Ellison and grew up with her five siblings in the deep south. After she married, they moved to Oregon where she resided for over 50 years, but she has always proudly considered herself a southerner and a Texan.
She spent her life and career caring for others as a pharmaceutical nurse at a care facility. Bringing comfort to those in her care brought her a sense of peace and purpose. After her retirement, she then dedicated herself to assisting in the raising her beloved grandchildren Jessica Barbee, who is now 26, then again with Dexter Barbee, now 12. We all know she will continue to lovingly watch over them from afar.
This loss will be felt far and wide, as she was the rock, that we all crashed against when the tides got rough. Her home, table and heart were always open to family and friends. She would always listen and offer words of encouragement, advice and even some hard truths. It will be much more difficult to navigate those waters without her.
Janet put God first in all things. She was our prayer warrior; always praying for her family and friends. She loved her church and their congregation. Holgate Baptist Church, now called Hope International Baptist Church is where Janet was a long-time member. We know she would want her memorial here in this church that held some of our families most profound events. In 2003, Pastor Ray Pound held a memorial service for her husband Larry “Gene” Barbee when he passed unexpectedly. In 2013, her children Rusty and Jenny Barbee were married in the church by Pastor Troy Pound.
She is survived by her three sons, Rusty Barbee, Shane Barbee and Robert Wilson. Her daughter in laws, Jenny Barbee and Jeniffer Wilson. Her grandchildren Ashley Mundell, Jessica Barbee, Faith Barbee, Dexter Barbee, Kendra Lipowski-Anderson, Haley Lipowski and her new great granddaughter Freyja Anderson. Her also her surviving siblings Jimmy Ellison, Don & Brenda Donelson and Linda Ellison.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Larry “Gene” Barbee. We take comfort in knowing they are now reunited.
She joins her siblings who have also preseceded her in death: Willie “Leon” Ellison, Tommy “Glenn” Ellison and Margret Juanita Ellison.
Navigating a memorial service during a pandemic will be very difficult and limiting, however, Pastor Rob Pengra expressed he would be honored to hold a small service at the church Janet loved with the people she loves.
