Maria del Carmen Marrufo

Maria del Carmen Marrufo, 85, of Pampa passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020 in Pampa.

Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Father Taylor Elzner, officiating.

Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Taylor Elzner, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. 

Maria was born on January 3, 1935 in Higueras, Durango, Mexico to Antonio and Julia Valdez Marrufo. She married Antonio Cortez Silva on May 19, 1953 in Jimenez, Mexico. Maria moved to Garden City, Kansas, where she worked as a laundry attendant for Holiday Inn for 10 years, before moving to Pampa in 1999. She enjoyed gardening, reading her bible, and taking care of her birds.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a great-granddaughter, Crystal Ramirez.

Maria is survived by 3 sons, Luis Cortez and wife Maria Elena of Dumas, Carlos Cortez of Amarillo, and Antonio Cortez of Port Arthur; 2 daughters, Lupe Cortez of Amarillo and Maria Cortez of Pampa; 5 brothers, Eustacio Marrufo of Liberal, Kansas, Benito Marrufo of Garden City, Kansas, Rafael Marrufo of Monahan, Antonio Marrufo and Guillermo Marrufo both of Durango, Mexico; 1 sister, Bertha Rutiaga of Durango, Mexico; 20 grandchildren, Nena Montes, Luis Cortez Jr., Fernando Cortez, Ana Corona, Jesse Cortez, David Cortez, Naomi Cortez, Aaron Cortez, Laura Cortez, Johnny Cortez, Victoria Cortez, Enrique Cortez, Daniel Cortez, Hector Figueroa, Leo Figueroa, Oscar Figueroa, Alfredo Mora, Daniel Lozano, Krystal Ramirez, and Stacy Ramirez; and numerous great-grandchildren.
