Maritta Ann Watson
Maritta Ann Watson, known as Rita, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at her home in Lubbock, Texas. She was born September 28, 1941 at Shamrock General Hospital, the youngest child of Cully Watson and Mamie Pitcock Watson of Pampa.
Rita was raised at Kelton and Friona, moved to Pampa in 1957, and graduated from Pampa High School in 1960. A lifelong Christian, she was a member of Agape United Methodist Church in Lubbock.
Rita Watson married Gary Mills in 1960 at Harrah Methodist Church in Pampa. She was most recently employed by Lydick-Hooks Roofing Company of Lubbock and retired in 2008. She was a resident of Pampa from 1957 to 1982 then a resident of Lubbock from 1982 until her death.
Ms. Watson was a descendent of several families that were amongst the earliest settlers in Texas, Kentucky, and Virginia. Her religious heritage included the Disciples of Christ, Missionary Baptist, and Methodist traditions. Rita was a direct descendant of soldiers who served in the American Revolution, the Mexican War of 1848, and the Civil War.
Rita was preceded in death by her mother in 1985, her father in 1999, and two brothers, Delton Watson in 1931 and Gene Watson in 2014.
She is survived by a daughter, Pam Mills Sumrall and husband Paul of Slaton, Texas; a son, Stephen Mills of Lockhart, Texas; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Rita’s family will receive guests at 10 am for one hour prior to the Celebration of Life Graveside service beginning at 11:00 am, Monday, February 22, 2021 in the Memory Gardens Mausoleum with Pastor Ruby Moultrie officiating. The family has entrusted the care of their loved one to Winegeart Funeral Home.
