ReLoaded: Fortnite Battle Royale rolls out split-screen play
Fortnite is one of the most popular cross-platform games that are free to download and play. Epic Games reported that there were 78.3 million active Fortnite players in August 2018, and nearly 250 million registered players as of March 2019.
The recent v11.30 update introduced possibly one of the most game-changing features, which is the ability to play Fortnite in split-screen mode.
I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this update, as my husband and I typically spent our time playing Fortnite before by passing the controller back and forth.
In addition, the only way to play with friends before was to have them connect to the game from their own PC or console. Now, you can play with a friend on the same console, in the same room without worry about the reliability of communication via microphone/headphone sets.
Strategizing Duo matches have become easier than ever before, and it is reflected in-game. The matches are now more challenging and fun.
In addition to the new split-screen feature, there are now currently a lot of winter-themed and Star Wars-themed content.
You can visit the Winter Lodge and open daily presents, which include Christmas and New Year’s themed gun wraps, parachutes, music, loading screens and more. It’s a great way to get items for your character without having to buy V-Coins (Fortnite’s in-game currency) to pay for items to customize your character.
With Disney Plus’ release of The Mandalorian and the hype surrounding the show, Fortnite has also released Star Wars-themed content that I am over the moon for.
If you listen closely, you can hear the specific hum of what I have been calling “blue cubes” hidden in different areas on the map. If you use the “search” option on one of these blue cubes, inside you will find four lightsabers, one of each color, for your character to use in the match you are currently playing.
The lightsabers are fantastic and are always a welcomed find. You can gather materials much faster than when using other harvesting tools and are easily the most effective weapon in the game at this time. The will kill an enemy quickly and block any attack as long as you are facing your attacker.
Unfortunately, you cannot use your lightsaber while swimming like you can other weapons, so be sure to keep this in mind if you are thinking of going after an opponet who is shooting at you with a gun on the opposite side of a river or lake. The minute your character becomes submerged in water with a lightsaber, you are a sitting duck.
Another Star Wars-themed weapon you can find is a First Order Blaster Rifle, which you can obtain by killing a group of Stormtroopers, if you can find them. They will usually alert you to their location by shooting at you when you happen to draw near their camp. Of course, comically, the Stormtroopers have awful aim. As long as you can avoid being hit, you should be able to survive the attack, kill them and take their Blaster Rifles. This is even easier if you have already found a lightsaber to fight them with.
The Blaster Rifles are great because they have endless ammunition. Be careful though, the guns will overheat after a period of time and have a cool-down period. Make sure to keep an eye on it in tense combat sitations.
How do you feel about the new split-screen option? Are you enjoying the use of Star Wars-themed weapons? Send me an e-mail and I may include your response in a future “ReLoaded” article.
