Lady Harvesters fall to Demonettes
DUMAS — The Pampa Lady Harvesters (11-8, 2-4) fell to the Dumas over the weekend as the Demonettes swept Pampa (12-25, 22-25, 17-25).
“We gave up seven or eight-point runs in all three sets at the beginning of the game and I feel like we just dug ourselves a hole early and put ourselves into a tough situation we couldn’t overcome,” Head Coach Kaylee Samulowitz.
The Lady Harvesters got on the board early in the first set with an ace from senior Shelbi Burrows and a kill from senior Tynaa Mojica to take the 2-0 lead. Dumas took control of the set as they went on an 13-3 run that was stopped by Mojica as Pampa trailed 13-5. Sophomore Hallie Hawthorne and seniors Ruth Andrews and Marcee Troxell each added kills to start a run for Pampa and make the score. But the Demonettes were too much for Pampa and took the first set 25-12.
Pampa got off to a hot start in the second set with a pair of kills from Mojica and a pair of serving errors from Dumas taking the early 5-2 lead. Dumas battled back against Pampa and tied the set at 5-5 before going on a 7-1 run. Hawthorne, Troxell and Andrews tallied kills as Pampa pulled back within two at 13-11.
Dumas then went on another 7-0 run to take the 20-11 lead. Troxell and Mojica started a Pampa rally that saw three straight kills from Mojica as Pampa pulled back within two at 21-19.
Mojica and Hawthorne added two more kills and an ace from senior Celest Ostercamp tied the set at 22-22.
“I always tell her parents if I could just clone Celest (Ostercamp) I would,” Samulowitz said. “She works harder than anybody. She’s a third-year starter and had 24 digs today. She’s all over the place and you couldn’t ask for more than that out of a libero. I love that kid and what she brings to the team.”
Dumas eventually took the set at 25-22 and the 2-0 match lead.
Pampa started the third set with a 6-3 lead after kills from Mojica and junior Haley Fossett. Mojica helped to extend the lead to 8-6 later in the set. Dumas went on a long, 12-2 run to take a 18-10 lead. Troxell and Mojica added some kills late in the set but the Demonettes were too much for Pampa and took the third set and the sweep at 25-17.
The Lady Harvesters return to action Tuesday at Borger. Game times are 5 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
“Borger is always a tough game,” Samulowitz said. “We’ve got to make sure we take care of our side of the court and be prepared for what they might bring.
“Borger is always a tough environment to play in. We just have to make sure we’re prepared and take care of our business.”
