Lady Harvesters late push locks up 50-31 win over Borger
BORGER — The Pampa Lady Harvesters (1-1) traveled to Borger on Friday seeking their first win of the season and District 4-4A play.
A late push that included a pair of threes by senior Ruth Andrews and four points from junior Savannah Valentine gave Pampa the 50-31 win over their rival Borger and Head Coach Jared Messer his first win as coach of the Lady Harvesters.
“It was a win we needed. It’s a rivalry game,” Messer said.
“No one can really understand what that group has been through without being on the team. That’s cause for celebration. They are just excited to finally get in the win column. I’m proud of their effort today.”
The Lady Harvesters took the 3-2 lead after a rebound-put back by sophomore Ariel Lacher within the first two minutes of the game. Later, Lacher went 2-2 in free throws followed by a basket from freshmen Katlyn Magers to extend the lead to 7-4.
Sophomore Braelyn Sellers added a basket followed by a big three from Valentine to give Pampa the 13-4 lead with 1:05 left in the opening period.
Leading 13-8 after the first quarter, senior Celest Ostercamp went 2-2 in free throws followed by a lay-up to make it 19-14 Pampa. At the half, Pampa led 22-18.
Borger came out of the locker room and took the 24-22 lead before Ostercamp drained a three to take a 25-24 lead with 6:10 left in the third quarter. Ostercamp hit two more baskets and it was 29-26 Pampa.
“We talked about how big it was not having Celest (Ostercamp) in the last couple games,” Messer said. “It was great news when we found out we could have her today. She brings another spark to our team.”
Lacher added two more baskets within 30 seconds of each other and Pampa took a two-possession 33-28 lead. Sellers hit one more basket before the end of the third quarter and Pampa started to pull away 37-30 after three.
“Coming out of halftime our lead wasn’t that big and they scored six straight points,” Messer said. “It would have been easy to get frustrated and to turn this into a close game. It speaks to how much they have grown to beat them by 19.”
Lacher and Valentine started a 13-0 for Pampa before Andrews drained two threes within 20 seconds of each other as Pampa went on to win 50-31.
The Lady Harvesters return to action Tuesday evening when they host the Perryton Rangerettes, game time is at 6 p.m.
“Perryton will be a little tougher game than tonight but they are definitely a beatable team,” Messer said. “We’ll have to talk about taking care of the ball, like we have all year. It’s a winnable game and I told the girls to enjoy this weekend and be ready Monday to get the ball rolling.”
Celest Ostercamp and Ariel Lacher each had 14 points to lead the team. Ostercamp had a three and was 5-6 in free throws; Lacher went 4-8 in free throws. Savannah Valentine had seven points and a three; Ruth Andrews had six points off two threes; Braelyn Sellers had four points; Ashley Albus had three points with a three; Katlyn Magers had two points.
