Lady Harvesters secure playoff spot with sweep over Perryton Rangerettes
PERRYTON — The Pampa Lady Harvesters (13-9, 4-5) traveled to Perryton on Tuesday evening with a playoff spot on the line against the Rangerettes.
The Lady Harvesters took care of business, sweeping the Rangerettes (25-13, 25-12, 25-12) to lock themselves in as the fourth seed, regardless of the results of their regular season finale at home against Canyon Saturday.
“(It feels good to get a playoff spot) for sure, especially with the level of play in our district after adding two really good teams,” Head Coach Kaylee Samulowitz said. “It feels good to get in (the playoffs) and get a chance to make a run for the playoffs for sure.”
The Lady Harvesters started the first set in a back-and-forth battle with Perryton with sophomore Mikalie Floyd and senior Ruth Andrews tying the set 3-3 with Pampa. Sophomore Hallie Hawthorne added a kill followed by a pair of aces from junior Haley Fossett as Pampa took an 8-4 lead.
Senior Tynaa Mojica, Floyd and Hawthorne kept pouring on the points and Pampa started to separate from the Rangerettes taking a 15-8 lead. Andrews and senior Marcee Troxell took over the set late as Pampa took the 25-13 lead.
The Lady Harvesters found themselves trailing early in the second set before senior Celest Ostercamp took over at the serving line and the Lady Harvesters went on a 15-4 run. Pampa had kills from Mojica, Hawthorne and Andrews during the run.
“It was a little sloppy in the beginning and we talked about just taking care of our side,” Samulowitz said. “I feel like we did that tonight. We didn’t make too many errors and didn’t give away too many points. It feels good to take care of our side and come away with an easy win like that.”
Andrews, Floyd, Hawthorne and Troxell tied up the loose ends of the second set and Pampa won the set 25-12 to take the commanding 2-0 match lead.
The Lady Harvesters picked up right where they left off taking an early 5-0 lead with senior Hallie Sieck at the serving line. Sieck had an ace and Floyd had a kill to spur the perfect start. Troxell, Floyd and Mojica added kills as Pampa pulled away quickly 8-3. Sophomore Ariel Lacher tallied a kill and senior Shelbi Burrows worked the serving line to help extend the lead to 13-5. Kills from Andrews, Floyd, Troxell and another ace from Sieck extended the Pampa run to 21-7. Troxell and Mojica finished off the set and the sweep for Pampa (25-13, 25-12, 25-12).
“She’s just crazy good. I’m glad she’s on my team and I don’t have to game-plan on how to stop her. She’s just insane and has had a great season. She’s super-athletic, has a super-high hitting percentage and is one of our best blockers. I’m glad she’s on my side.”
The Lady Harvesters secured fourth place in District and a spot in the playoffs. As long as Snyder wins on Saturday, the Lady Harvesters will play them next Thursday, Oct. 29 at Plainview. But before that, Pampa will host Canyon in the regular-season finale on Saturday. Game times are tentatively 11 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. (freshmen, JV and varsity).
“That’s all it is (a tune-up game for the playoffs),” Samulowitz said. “Nothing we can do will change our fourth place spot in district. Hopefully we can use that to get better and practice some things to get prepared for the playoff game. It would be fun to go in there and get a win (against Canyon).”
Ariel Lacher had a kill and a dig; Celest Ostercamp had an ace, seven assists and 16 digs; Haley Fossett had two aces, an assist and nine digs; Hallie Hawthorne had an ace, three kills and a dig; Hallie Sieck had two aces, 37 assists and six digs; Marcee Troxell had six kills and an assist; Mikalie Floyd had 11 kills, an assist and four digs; Ruth Andrews had 10 kills and a dig; Shelbi Burrows had 10 digs and Tynaa Mojica had six kills and two digs.
