Pampa Lady Harvesters back on the winning track with sweep over Borger Lady Bulldogs
BORGER — The Pampa Lady Harvesters (12-8, 3-4) traveled to Borger Tuesday afternoon where they swept the Lady Bulldogs (25-11, 25-19, 25-16). This was the second time in 2020 Pampa swept Borger in volleyball.
“Borger is a rivalry and coming to Borger is always a tough game,” Head Coach Kaylee Samulowitz said. “I was really proud of the way we came out and handled our business today. It feels really good.”
Sophomore Mikalie Floyd and senior Ruth Andrews led Pampa to a quick 4-1 lead. Junior Haley Fossett and senior Tynaa Mojica kept adding kills for Pampa as they extended their lead to 8-2. Sophomore Hallie Hawthorne scored an ace before Andrews added two more kills as Pampa took a staggering 18-6 lead.
Senior Jasmine Martinez scored an ace on a serve later in the set as Pampa took the first set 25-11.
Mojica led the Lady Harvesters to a 4-3 lead in the second set. Floyd, senior Hallie Sieck, Andrews and an ace from senior Shelbi Burrows extended Pampa’s lead to 10-6.
Floyd scored a kill and an ace later in the set to make it 13-8 before a series of errors from Borger helped Pampa take a commanding 21-13 lead. Floyd added another kill before Pampa won the set 25-19.
In the third set, Pampa jumped out to a quick 5-3 lead with a kill from Mojica and an ace from Floyd. The Lady Harvesters continued to pour on the points with another kill from Mojica and a kill from sophomore Ariel Lacher.
Sieck added two more kills later in the set as Pampa continued to lead 13-8. Floyd and Andrews added two more to make it a 15-8.
“I was a setter when I played so Hallie (Sieck) has a really special place in my heart,” Samulowitz said.
“She’s been doing her job for four years on varsity and she’s going to be really hard to replace next year. She’s brought so much to our team. She runs our offense and she’s one of the most athletic kids I’ve ever gotten to coach. She’s fun, and it’s going to be so hard to replace her next year.”
Pampa continued to take advantage of Borger’s mistakes as they took the 20-11 lead before senior Marcee Troxell added a kill to make it 22-11. The Lady Harvesters went on to win the set 25-16 and get the sweep (25-11, 25-19, 25-16).
The Lady Harvesters currently sit fourth in district play and will host the District-leading Hereford Lady Whitefaces on Saturday. Game times are at 11 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
“I hope (the strong first set at Hereford) gives us some confidence going into this game,” Samulowitz said. “It’s a zero-pressure situation for us. They are number one in our district, we’re number four. We don’t really have anything to lose. Hopefully we just go out and have some fun and see what happens.”
