River Road Lady Cats late rally pushes them past Pampa Lady Harvesters 49-46
The Pampa Lady Harvesters (0-1) opened the season against the River Road Lady Cats on Tuesday evening.
After Pampa took a 46-42 lead with roughly 1:30 left in the game, the Lady Cats went on a 7-0 run to outlast Pampa 49-46.
“I think our inexperience was the factor there,” head coach Jared Messer said. “We have a lot of girls who this was their first varsity game. Applying the changes from the timeout in big moments comes with experience.”
Less than a minute into the game, senior Ruth Andrews nailed a bucket to give Pampa the early 2-0 lead. Senior Celest Ostercamp went 2-2 from the free throw line to add another pair and Pampa led 4-3.
River Road scored four unanswered before a jump-shot from sophomore Sydney Larkin pulled Pampa within one point at 7-6 with 2:40 left in the first quarter. River Road added a bucket and had the 9-6 lead after one.
River Road extended their lead to five in the second half before 7-2 run that included a pair of free throws from Ostercamp, a basker and a three from sophomore Rhoda Buckley pulled Pampa back within one at 14-13 with 4:25 left in the half.
The Lady Cats pulled away at 19-13 before a pair of lay-ups from Ostercamp pulled Pampa back within a bucket at 19-17. A 7-0 run from River Road had Pampa trailing 24-17 before a mid-range jumper from sophomore Ariel Lacher, an assist from Lacher to freshmen Katlyn Magers and another bucket from Lacher off the assist from Ostercamp spurred a 6-0 run from Pampa pulling them within one at 24-23 at halftime.
“Celest (Ostercamp) was great,” Messer said. “Volleyball shape and basketball shape are two different things and she came in, had her first practice yesterday and you couldn’t tell by the way she played.”
River Road started the second half on a 5-0 run until Pampa went on a 8-0 run of their own that included a trey from Andrews gave Pampa the 31-28 lead with 4:29 left in the third quarter.
River Road battled back and took a 36-33 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Another three, this time from Buckley, got things started for Pampa in the fourth and tied the game at 6:21 left to play.
Lacher sank a bucket off the assist from Ostercamp and Pampa took the 38-37 lead. River Road eventually took a 42-41 lead with 2:56 left in the the game before freshman Kyah Brown sank a pair of free throws followed by a traditional three-point play from Ostercamp gave Pampa the 46-42 lead.
The Lady Cats went on a 7-0 run in the last 1:30 of the game, however, and Pampa fell to River Road 49-46.
The Lady Harvesters return to action on Saturday when they travel to Tulia. Varsity starts at roughly 12:30 p.m.

Celest Ostercamp led the team in points with 14 points and went 6-9 from the stripe; Ruth Andrews had eight points, a three and was 1-2 from the line; Rhoda Buckley had eight points with two threes; Ariel Lacher had eight points; Kyah Brown had four points and was 2-6 from the free throw line; Katlyn Magers had two points and Sydney Larkin had two points.
As a team, Pampa shot 9-23 from the free throw line.
