Sam Anguiano homers twice in Pampa Harvesters’ 15-8 win over Perryton
The Pampa Harvesters (10-7-1, 2-2) evened up their District record on Friday, knocking off the visiting Perryton Rangers in a 15-8 win.
Junior Sam Anguiano hit two home runs in the win and the Harvesters will finish the first round of District play Tuesday at Canyon.
“With the wind blowing out it was a tough day to play. But our kids did some really good things,” Head Coach Kaleb Snelgrooes said. “Our kids competed and for them to come out and even our district record at 2-2 going into the long weekend is nice. I’m super-proud of our kids.”
The Harvesters were trailing 3-0 early in the bottom of the first when senior Nolan Groomer hit a two-out single, setting the stage for S. Anguiano’s first home run, bringing the Harvesters within a run at 3-2.
The Rangers added three more runs in the their half of the second to lead 5-2. In the home half of the second with one out gone, juniors Hunter Nichols and Hunter Dyer each drew a walk, followed by junior Armando Miranda taking a pitch to load the bases.
Senior Cayden Stout drilled a base hit to centerfield to bring a run home. S. Anguiano drew an RBI walk followed by a double from junior Cayson Steward to empty the bases and give Pampa the 7-5 lead. Junior Rhett Hill added another RBI double to trade places with Steward and give Pampa the three-run, 8-5 lead.
The Harvesters held the Rangers scoreless in the top of the third and went back to work in the bottom of the third with a one-out single from Dyer. Miranda hit a RBI single to left to plate Dyer and extend the lead to 9-5.
Perryton got one back in the top of the fourth and Pampa took a 9-6 lead into the bottom frame of the sixth. Hill reached after being hit by a pitch. With two outs down, Nichols reached on a pop fly to put two on base. Dyer hit a fly ball and the Harvesters capitalized on Perryton errors, scoring two runs in the process. Miranda hit a RBI double and doubled up the Rangers 12-6.
S. Anguiano hit a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth to give Pampa the 13-6 lead.
“He had two plays and one over by the fence there and hit two home runs,” Snelgrooes said. “He had a great day. I kind of challenged him this week and asked for a little more from him. He sure came through for us today.”
With two outs and one on in the fifth, Jade Ward hit a double to right field plating Steward. After Nichols drew a walk, Dyer hit a double to right and brought home Ward to give Pampa the staggering 15-6 lead.
Pampa held Perryton to two runs the remainder of the game and Pampa took the 15-8 win.
The Harvesters return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Canyon to take on the Eagles to finish the first round of District play. Game time is at 5 p.m.
“We are going to enjoy this win and we have Canyon waiting for us,” Snelgrooes said. “I told them Canyon doesn’t care how you beat Perryton, they want to beat you.”
Rhett Hill pitched two innings with five hits, five runs, a strikeout, a walk and a home run. Hunter Nichols pitched five innings with seven hits, three runs, five strikeouts and a walk.
Sam Anguiano went 2-3 with three runs scored, four RBI a walk and two home runs; Armando Miranda went 2-3 with a run scored, a double, two RBI and walk; Cayden Stout went 2-5 with a run scored, a RBI and a stolen base; Nolan Groomer went 2-5 with a run scored; Rhett Hill went 1-3 with a run scored, a RBI, a walk and a double; Jade Ward went 1-1 with a run scored, a RBI and a double; Hunter Nichols went 1-2 with two walks and two runs scored; Hunter Dyer went 2-3 with three runs scored, a RBI, a walk, a stolen base and a double; Cayson Steward went 2-3 with a run scored, three RBI, a walk, a double and a stolen base.
The Harvesters scored 15 runs with 15 hits and three errors; Perryton scored eight runs with 12 hits and two errors.
