James Edgar (Ed) Sweet

James Edgar (Ed) Sweet was born August 12, 1926 in Tchula, Mississippi and died August 4, 2023 in Houston, Texas.  He and his wife, Margaret, and two small children moved to Pampa from Greenville, Texas in October, 1961.  Ed lived in Pampa until May, 2020.

Ed worked at Security Federal Savings and Loan from 1961 until his retirement in 1991.

Ed and Margaret joined the First Methodist Church shortly after arriving in Pampa. They were both active members and participated in numerous church functions throughout the years.  Their church home was also the place where they made many lifelong friendships.

Ed had many interests and hobbies throughout his long life.  As a young man, he raised birds and had many other animals, including a horse and a monkey.  He studied piano and dance and enjoyed music all his life. He was an excellent cook and had a very green thumb. His love of rocks and rock hunting developed into a skill for jewelry making which brought him many hours of pleasure.  He taught himself Spanish and was continually practicing and improving his vocabulary.  Ed was an avid reader and was always on the lookout for a Spanish book he did not have.  Perhaps his biggest passion was travel.  He studied maps and itineraries and enjoyed every moment of planning the trips that he got to share with Margaret.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, who died in Pampa in 2018.  He is survived by his son, Jim Sweet, and daughter in law Rebecca Sweet of San Antonio, and by his daughter, Cassandra Vazquez, and son in law Leopoldo Vazquez of Houston. Ed also leaves grandchildren Emily, Ben, Katherine, Laura and Erika, as well as five great grandchildren, Lena, George, Asher, James and Zella.

Ed will be remembered as a loving father, kind friend and as a person who lived life to the fullest and was thankful for all of life’s opportunities.

There will be a memorial service for Ed, Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church, Pampa.
